Program Description

Event Details

On Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. young adults, families, and anyone else who wants to help clean up the Wabash River watershed in Adams County will first register at Limberlost State Historic Site in Geneva, and you will be assigned a particular area within the Adams County Wabash River watershed to pick up litter. For example, you could be….

•    Picking up litter along US Hwy 27 and South Adams Trails
•    Picking up litter at the Limberlost Covered Bridge Park and along CR950S
•    Picking up litter at several other locations in southern Adams County
•    Perhaps you already have a location in Adams County you’d like to clean up.

At 3:00 PM, all participants are invited to the Geneva Public Library for refreshments and a program about Sandhill Cranes--a large and impressive bird that would surely thank you for your volunteer service if it could.   The program is being presented by Sam Urquidez, Outreach Biologist Assistant – Indiana.  Sam is associated with the International Crane Foundation, E11376 Shady Lane Rd. Baraboo, WI 53913. Sandhill cranes are frequent visitors to the Limberlost wetlands in the fall and spring of the year, and there is evidence that some cranes are using the 1800-acre Limberlost Conservation area as nesting sites.

To all participating in this clean-up event. The historic Limberlost Cabin, home of Indiana author & naturalist, Gene Stratton-Porter, will be open for a free walk-through tour until 4:30 p.m. The interior and exterior of the home look very much like it did when Gene lived in the home from 1895-1913.

We hope you’ll decide to volunteer and help us clean up portions of the Wabash River watershed.  It’s a crime to throw out trash along any road in Indiana.  At this time, we can’t make litter bugs clean up the mess they created, but every piece of litter you pick up helps to beautify the neighborhood and improve the environment.

This event is sponsored by a grant from the Wabash River Heritage Corridor Commission (WRHCC) with financial assistance from Friends of the Limberlost. Trash bags, safety vests, and gloves are provided by INDOT (Indiana Department of Transportation).
